prominent postits, news, news roundup, weeklyIt’s that time of the week again – so here’s our traditional Friday news round-up, giving you the weekly scoop! Let’s take a few moments to commemorate this week's most eye-catching news stories.

  1. RIP Rowdy Roddy

This was a sad week for wrestling fans, as legendary professional wrestler and film actor Roderick "Roddy" Toombs, better known by his ring name "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, died at 61 from natural causes. People all over the world loved him for his fiery charisma (he was dubbed “Hot Rod,” after all), which he brought out full force in his wrestling persona of Scottish villain “Roddy the Piper.” His starring role in the 1988 sci-fi cult classic, They Live, was truly one to remember and just amplified his iconic reputation. This WWE Hall of Famer will be remembered by millions as one of the most entertaining, controversial, and bombastic performers ever and a beloved figure throughout the wrestling community. So, if you remember watching Rowdy Roddy and his famous Piper’s Pit segments, consider cracking a coconut over your head in his honor.

  1. Don’t Speak ::Crying Face Emoji::

It seems like there’s been some bad juju surrounding celebrity marriages lately – especially in the past week. Just as people were starting to heal from the sting of Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton's divorce news, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s split got out to the (heartbroken) public. And to boot, news about yet another celebrity breakup surfaced when Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock announced their separation after 26 years of marriage. Reba, we thought it was Forever Love! With fans losing hope in the sanctity of marriage and articles being released claiming Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy are calling it quits (NEVER.), what’s up, world?

  1. Is Your Chilly Office Sexist?

If you work in an office, there's a good chance that it's absurdly over air-conditioned during the summer. News this past week harped on the fact that the formulas used to design and calibrate most heating and cooling systems (made in the 1960s) are based on a single estimate of the metabolic activity of a 40-year-old, 155 pound male – so does that mean sexism lives in cold offices? Surely most women you know are typically cold (it’s science, after all), so it’s no surprise that feminists are speaking out. Are women still being treated unfairly at work? Ask the person who sets the office AC.

  1. Cabbies vs. Uber

This recent occurrence hits close to home, as it affected our staff on our commute into the Charlestown office! On Monday, Cambridge cab drivers went on strike to protest Uber – since it’s been stealing a growing numbers of their riders. So, although the traffic backup on the Mass Ave. bridge got people’s attention, the issue boils down to: Uber is too popular to stop. The “Save Uber” campaign that quickly manifested clearly speaks to that. While the Cambridge cabbies were just trying to stand up and earn more for their families, ride-hailing smartphone apps don’t seem to be going anywhere; there will probably be some sort of regulation set in place, but bans are a no-go for now. Oh, gotta go – my phone says my driver is arriving!

5. GOP Nomination

Cleveland, OH was raging last night! Between the FOX news moderators not being shy and Donald Trump calling Rosie O'Donnell fat, ugly, everything under the sun, it was definitely a trip to watch. There were lots of different opinions, clearly, and this will be a fun election to watch. Grab your popcorn; this is going to be a good ride! If you need to brush up on who's running, you're in luck with this handy dandy guide!
