If Dunkin' Donuts Can Upsell Munchkins, You Can Upsell in Your Emails

On your morning trips to Dunkin' Donuts, you're familiar with the internal battle that rages as you order your coffee: "You will not also buy a doughnut. You will not also buy a doughnut." Well Dunkin' has recently made plans to be the sadistic enabler. Since a few doughnut holes never hurt anybody, a Canton location will start asking "Do you want a few munchkins with that?" Come on. Who can say no to just a few?

If you're running an e-commerce business, upsell emails are the perfect opportunity to keep customers buying from you. With that said, be tasteful about it and don't try to sell something right after they already purchased something. For example, an order confirmation or thank you message shouldn't also pester them for more business. Occasional offers in between purchases will do the trick.

To get a feel for how to write upsell emails, here are a few guidelines to get you started.

It's not exactly like Amazon's "You might also like..."

While this platform does gangbusters for Amazon's website, you need to use different language in your email offers. "One-of-a-kind" pieces and products "in limited supply" are sure ways to convey exclusivity to special customers.

Always Personalize

At this point, you should already know to include the buyer's name in the email. No one likes to read the same message that's been e-blasted to everyone else. The reader should feel like he/she is getting a one-on-one

Also, tell them you hope they're enjoying the bar of bacon soap (you're welcome) they bought from you. This reminds the customer what a great find that was, and it will make them wonder what other cool stuff you have to offer. Show them something that relates to that bacon soap...such as maple syrup conditioner.

Ask them for input

When you're upselling them, give them the opportunity to up-vote, down-vote, or in some way give feedback to your product suggestions. This gives the customer a say in the process and further personalizes the e-commerce experience.

Upsell emails aren't simple attempts to get more money out of the customer. The particularly effective ones communicate a desire to help the individual by providing them with a uniquely relevant offer. Establish this tone, and you'll have the reader's attention.

Does your business have additional digital marketing needs in addition to emailing? Ever considered outsourcing the work?
