Aside from being a master of the inbound methodology, what makes someone a successful inbound marketer? Set yourself up for success and keep moving forward in your career by developing these habits and practices. Habits Of A Successful Inbound Marketer

  1. Always Learning

In an industry like digital marketing that changes so quickly, every successful inbound marketer needs to stay on top of the latest news and trends, as well as dedicate time to their own professional development. This should include following industry blogs or podcasts, reading relevant books, following inbound marketing influencers, and maybe even adding to your skills with an online class or two. Be interested in learning more and adding to your knowledge base.

“In my experience, the best marketing executives allocate at least five hours to professional development each week. This includes reading, going to conferences, working with consultants, and taking online courses,” writes Bob Ruffolo of Impact Branding & Design.

  1. Focus On Metrics

Analytics truly can be a marketer’s best friend. Effective marketers not only measure metrics, they measure the right ones. They are also able to look beyond the numbers and find ways to apply them and make better informed, data-backed decisions for their companies. Monitoring your metrics will allow you to see trends and make changes to your marketing initiatives as you go. Plus, research shows that marketers who check their analytics 3 or more times per week are 20% more likely to achieve positive ROI. Demonstrating ROI is likely one of your top goals, so make monitoring analytics a habit.

  1. Set Short And Long-Term Goals

Regularly setting goals and having a process in place to achieve them helps you to better use your time and to understand what you are trying to accomplish. As an inbound marketer, your goals will help to keep you on track and focused on what’s really important. Make sure you are setting SMART goals.

Having a long-term goal to work towards for the year, or longer, is important, but so is having smaller, short-term goals along the way that contribute to your main objective. That way, you’ll continue to make progress and feel a sense of accomplishment.

  1. Take Risks

Failure is a part of life, but the most successful people don’t let failure defeat or define them. Not being afraid to try something new or take a risk allows you to find creative ways to tackle problems or a better way to do something. Thomas Edison is quoted as saying, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” He went on to invent the lightbulb, among other things. Successful inbound marketers experiment and learn from their mistakes so they can improve the next time.

  1. Be Adaptable

Change happens. The ability to be flexible and adapt to change, either within your company or your industry, will set you apart. Continuously learning and staying on top of new trends and best practices is important, but you also need to understand how to implement them. This also means that if something isn’t working the way you anticipated, you are able to react and look for another solution. Adaptability influences how you approach challenges and problem solving.

  1. Analyze The Competition

Smart marketers understand the full scope of their industry, including their competitors, so they can communicate their company’s unique value proposition. Why should someone choose you? Understanding your competition and even use them to grow by analyzing what they do well and where there are areas to differentiate your brand. Even seeing what other industries are doing can be beneficial. There are so many companies doing great marketing, so check them out and get inspired.

  1. Get S**t Done

At the end of the day, you need to be able to get things done to be an effective marketer. This includes making the most out of your resources and knowing how to prioritize tasks. Sometimes that will mean that done is better than perfect. The ability to be decisive is also key. Wavering back and forth constantly is not a recipe for success. Sometimes you just need to make a choice and move forward (remember what we said about risks). Your performance depends on what you produce.

With every successful inbound marketer, there is a marketing automation tool behind them.
